Depending on how you see it, we’ve got some good news and at the same time potentially some bad news! EA confirmed that Star Wars Battlefront won’t be the only Battlefront game, nor will it be the only Star Wars game they will make, thanks to EA’s licensing deal with Disney (for 10 years)!
Here’s a nice little quote from Blake Jorgensen (EA CFO):
“We struck a licensing deal with Disney a few years back that’s almost ten years in length. The game that comes out tomorrow, Star Wars Battlefront, is a traditional first-person style shooter game. Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC. It’s a huge opportunity for us.”
Now from what we see here, they plan to make future Star Wars games, not necessarily based on movies and spin-offs, but to use them as reference. With the latest Battlefront looking pretty great, I’m actually quite excited to be honest.
Now, remember when I said it might be bad news at the same time? Well let’s just say EA isn’t EXACTLY known for serving its fans and there are many reasons why they aren’t the most favorable . Since they are a massive corporation, their number one priority is to make money, everything else comes second (like the deal with early access for Xbox owners which is basically a marketing strategy). As a result, game quality usually isn’t as high as it should be when it comes to EA. They also have this weird obsession for making everything multiplayer. A good example is the Battlefront game which is being released in a couple of days from now. There’s a huge emphasis on online multiplayer (as with most games these days *sigh*, but that’s a discussion for another day) and little offline gameplay. Sure you can do a few solo missions here and there but the progression has moved from solo to online multiplayer. The first two Battlefront games had some awesome single-player/split-screen things to do, but it seems the focus has shifted with the latest Battlefront.
/End rant…. Anyway, how do you feel about this? I’d love to know what you think of Star Wars games being developed by EA DICE for the next 10 years!
