World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth Cinematic & Features

Did you happen to see the Battle for Azeroth announcement? I did, and I have to say…I’m pleasantly surprised! After many years, we get to travel to Kul’Tiras and Zandalar, which I know many of you have also been keen on going to.

Cinematic Trailer

Let’s take a look at the trailer below.

Getting this out of the way first, the cinematic looks gorgeous as always, And the CGI (computer generated imagery) is impressive. The CGI (computer generated imagery) is impressive.

Now we see a big battle between the two factions, but what we don’t know, is who or what started it. We know from the sample in Christie Golden’s book, “Before the Storm”, that Sylvanas is plotting to take Stormwind, but that’s it. Something between that moment and the trailer triggers this amped up war.

What we should be asking is…was burning Teldrassil a knee jerk reaction to the Alliance laying siege on Lordaeron (Undercity), or vice versa?

I’m still glad that we’re moving away from the sci-fi elements that we’re seeing a lot of in Legion, which is great. It’s almost like a ‘refocus’ as we go back to faction war, and see more character developments as opposed to having to stop yet another big baddie for the nth time. It reminded me of the World of Warcraft vanilla cinematic (link here).

And speaking of vanilla…I’m neither here nor there, so I won’t particularly be talking about it here.

What do you think of the Battle for Azeroth cinematic?


  • Level 120 cap
  • Two new continents consisting of 6 zones with Alliance leveling on Kul’Tiras and Horde on Zandalar, but the other continent unlocks for both factions at level 120:
    • (Alliance) Kul’Tiras – Tiragarde Sound, Drustvar and Stormsong Valley
    • (Horde) Zandalar – Zuldazar, Nazmir and Vol’dun
    • Expect a big campaign to weave through each zone
  • Warfronts – 20 player battles with RTS style gameplay. Gathering resources for buildings and troops. It’s essentially an expanded version of the Broken Shore system
  • 3 player scenarios – Seemingly dynamically generated each time you enter them to add replay value. Main goal is to get Azerite and there are 3 modes; Normal, Heroic, Mythic and PvP
  • Azerite – Gather Azerite to level up your Artifact necklace, the Hearth of Azeroth.
    • Customise your Azerite armour (helm, shoulder, chest) for extra traits
  • Artifact weapons are retired when Legion ends
  • The Legion legendary system is not being continued. Azerite armour is replacing it
  • 10 dungeons including the following:
    • Tol Dagor
    • Waycrest Manor
    • Shrine of the Storm
    • Siege of Boralus
    • Temple of Sethraliss
    • The Underrot
    • Kings’ Rest
    • Kezan
  • 2 raids:
    • Uldir, Halls of Control is the first raid and has 8 bosses. It’s a Titan quarantine facility where you face off against the source of Zandalar’s corruption
    • Queen Azshara as a raid boss in the second raid
  • 6 playable races – 6 at launch and more planned later:
    • Alliance – Dark Iron Dwarf, Void Elf and Lightforged Draenei
    • Horde – Nightborne, Zandalari Troll and Highmountain Tauren
    • 6 additional character slots per server
  • Scaled zones – throughout the game, most, if not all zones will be scaled which is coming in patch 7.3.5:
    • 1-60 zones – not sure on specifics yet
    • Outland and Northrend content will be for levels 60-80
    • Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria content 80 – 90 will be for levels 80-90
  • Two new Arenas, one Battleground and new Brawls:
    • Arenas in Tiragarde and Zuldazar
    • (Battleground) The Seething Shore – Fight over Azerite in Silithus with control point gameplay. This is coming in patch 7.3.5
    • New PvP Brawls coming
  • PvE/PvP servers – These are going away with the ability to toggle PvP on or off. When you toggle PvP on, you’ll see others who also have it on. You will gain extra rewards as an incentive when on PvP realms. Bounties/assassinations could be a feature. You can only toggle PvP on/off in a major city i.e. Stormwind, Silvermoon, Dalaran etc.
  • Stat squish
    • Not only for damage/healing numbers, but also an item level squish. According to multiple streams, a level 110 character in item level 185 gear has roughly 15k health, with elite enemies at roughly 100k health. See below for examples:
      • Ahn’Qiraj (level 60) – 66-88 -> roughly 58
      • Heroic Dungeons – 865 -> 200
      • Mythic Dungeons – 885 -> 220
      • Mythic Tomb of Sargeras – 930 -> 265
      • Mythic Antorus, the Burning Throne – 970 -> 305
      • Legendary items – 1000 -> 335
  • Titanforged – They are looking reducing spiky titanforging. Azerite armour cannot be titanforged
  • Enhanced social features
    • Anyone can join a community (cross realm), even if you’re in a guild. You can have community events set up and different ranks
    • Bringing voice chat into the game itself
    • Improved social structures

There’s not really anything that makes me go ‘meh’, which is good! Although when it comes to World of Warcraft, I eat it all up. The most impressive being 6 added races, where we usually have only gotten 1 or 2. Sure they’re basically Tauren, Elves and Dwarves, but it’s welcome! I know many players who have been bored of the current races and would like a change. After all, it has been 5 years since the last race, the fluffy Pandaren.

There’s likely going to be more information soon, so I’ll be updating this post as I find it out!

After having played since vanilla, and seeing my favorite and familiar elements of the game eroded, and evolved to being unrecognizable in every expansion (particularly Cata, which this reminds me of more than Vanilla) destruction of yet more fabulous vanilla zones (Did they learn nothing from losing subs for Cata?) I finally cancelled my sub since they cancelled my fun, I’m sorry to say. Enough was enough.

    And fix the dam and Theramore already!
    Destruction of Teldrassil and UC is the nail in my coffin.
