Last week I logged on and I was surprised to see that I was invited to the World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth (BfA). Admittedly, when it comes to alpha/beta testing with World of Warcraft, I just look at how classes play and what the systems are like because I want to experience the zones for the first time after it releases.
As it currently stands, the Azerite traits are in the early stages and even the interface states “Temprary User Interface”. Internally, it’s likely a little further along, but at the moment it needs more work.
If the traits differ with each piece of gear, then that’s great. The traits themselves are fine, as they have Artifact weapon skills and legendary effects baked into them, which is far better than the +x% damage on the Artifact weapons.
The Flaws Need to be Addressed
One big problem I see with Azerite traits is that there really isn’t all that much choice. The first row is spec specific, so there’s one trait for each specialisation (spec) within your class and an extra one as a generic effect which benefits all of the specs. The generic trait is incredibly dull so if you don’t choose that one, you only have one other choice really. To really have options, which is what Blizzard said Azerite traits are supposed to provide, the first row should be based on which spec you have active and change when you switch.
Another issue I have with it is that the third row has one trait that boosts the item level of that piece of gear by +5, and we know that’s as dull as you can get. I get that the more interesting perks are obtained faster, but it’s not exactly exciting when you finally upgrade that Azerite gear for the +5 item level bonus. Instead of this, it could enhance a specific skill. For example Lava Burst hits all targets affected by Flame Shock for 20% of the original damage. Or something like that…!
A final flaw with what we have now is how there’s no way to change a trait after choosing one. I’m sure in a future build, there’ll be a way to change your traits, but at the moment it’s sparking a little bit of conversation and I think should be addressed sooner rather than later.
It’s Getting There!
Other than that, the traits themselves are mostly good, and if they do change with each piece of gear, then it’ll make getting a new piece of gear a lot more interesting. Item level won’t be the only factor with Azerite gear so for those who like to sim their characters, you’re probably going to be doing a lot more of that!
Azerite gear from harder sources such as Heroic and Mythic will also come with more potent traits, which is what I read from one of the comments from one of the build notes (I can’t find the quote though). Having this in place will be good to incentivize player to get involved with more difficult content.
